This project was undertaken to provide additional sewer
capacity for the North Richmond and Chester Boulevard Sanitary
Basins. The existing interceptor was approaching capacity
due to rapid growth as well as the relocation of Reid Hospital,
resulting in several surcharging events.
Capacity requirements for the drainage basin, alternative
routes and configurations of sewers, lift stations, and
force mains were investigated to address the problem.
Donohue developed five design alternatives, each with
different combinations of new and upgraded sewers and upgraded
lift stations. The selected alternative incorporates a
comprehensive gravity system which eliminated the need
for four existing lift stations.
The design includes 14,000 feet of interceptor sewers,
of which 2,600 feet are aerial sewers and 1000 feet are
deep sewers. This alternative provides the lowest long-term
operational costs and reduces the impacts on traffic and
property owners.
