Donohue & Associates and the City of O'Fallon received a 2008 Engineering Excellence Grand Award from The American Council of Engineering Companies of Missouri (ACEC/MO).
The award recognizes improvements to the City of Of Fallon's wastewater plant. In late 2006 and early 2007, three out of four screw pumps that convey wastewater to the bio-filter towers at the plant failed. The plant was in danger of violating its NPDES permit. Donohue was retained to provide fast-track design services for the failed screw pumps.
The City and Donohue assembled a strong team that was committed to restoring full treatment quickly. The team elected to use submersible pumps instead of screw pumps because they would save construction time, cost less, and make future maintenance and replacement easier. A typical lifespan for this project type is over one year. This project was designed and constructed in 18 weeks. The project met the City's requirements for a long-term solution and was completed under budget. Most importantly, no permit violations occurred at any time.
ACEC/MO annually recognizes creative application and quality design by engineering firms. This project was one of only eight to receive this honor in the state. |
