Booster Station
Orland Park, Illinois

Orland Park, IL

The 153rd street booster pump station provides in-line booster pumping to the Village of Orland Park’s water distribution system. The pump station houses five variable-speed pumps and controls and a standby engine generator. The five pumps range in size from 80 gpm to 750 gpm capacity.

Maintaining environmental integrity was important for this project. The booster station was built adjacent to a wetland; to reduce impacts to the wetland, the booster station was relocated from its original position on-site to sit atop a hill, as far from the wetlands as possible. Coconut logs and straw bails were used at the edge of the wetland to prevent erosion and silt fences were maintained by the contractor on three sides of the site to control erosion and protect the wetlands during the earthwork portion of the project. In addition to these measures, the Village opted to use a permeable pavement for the driveway. This pavement reduces harmful runoff and facilitates drainage to the wetland.

As the booster station is located in an upscale residential community, the architecture of the facility was given considerable attention. The home-like structure was intended to complement the look and feel of the surrounding community. The landscape was also designed to mimic community standards. The surrounding site consists of a low maintenance, no-mow grass that is supplemented with several native grasses to blend in with the area and facilitate drainage.
