Donohue & Associates, Inc. and the North Shore
Sanitary District received
a Best of State Award in the Engineering Excellence competition
sponsored by the American Council of Engineering Companies
of Wisconsin (ACEC WI). The award-winning project involved
the planning and design of odor control improvements for
sludge handling facilities at the North Shore Sanitary
District’s Gurnee, Illinois, Sewage Treatment Plant.
The
new facilities are the most advanced odor control system
in the country and are achieving record levels of performance,
better than any comparable system in the wastewater industry.
The improvements, designed by Donohue, include several
innovations that resulted in the removal of very high
levels of complex odorous compounds. Prior to the project,
the
District was receiving numerous complaints relating to
odors from the sludge handling facilities. Since the
new odor control facilities were placed into service more
than
one year ago, the District has received no odor complaints
related to the sludge handling facilities.
The North Shore
Sanitary District, located in northern Illinois, serves
over 250,000 people and is the second
largest sanitary district in the state.
This project
was one of eight in Wisconsin to receive a Best of State
Award and was a finalist in the national
ACEC Engineering Excellence competition.
